After an unexpected asthma attack, Azura found herself undergoing an emergency cesarean section delivery at just 25 weeks and 5 days of pregnancy.
Farhan, originally due to arrive on 16 August, was born prematurely on 8 May, weighing only 752 grams and measuring 33 cm long. Before his birth, doctors discovered abnormalities in his heart. Following further assessments, Farhan was diagnosed with Blue Blood Syndrome and required three separate surgeries to address his condition.
Azura and her husband, Fauzan, were devastated. Farhan was their rainbow baby, a glimmer of hope following a previous pregnancy loss. This made the challenges even more emotional.
Farhan’s journey began with a six-month stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). During this time, Azura was introduced to the RMHC Family Room within the NICU. The lactation room provided Azura with a comfortable space to express milk, ensuring that Farhan received fresh breast milk daily. This convenience was a source of comfort during an otherwise stressful time.
In the NICU Family Room, Azura connected with other parents who were also navigating a difficult journey. These shared moments became a source of strength and solidarity.
“The Family Room in NICU was a place for families to come together and grow stronger together,” Azura shared. She added that the friendly faces and warm greetings from the staff and volunteers brought her emotional support during trying days.
After six months, Farhan’s condition required him to be transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Azura and her husband were offered a stay at the RMHC House allowing them to stay close to Farhan. The couple have been staying for 42 days, forming strong bonds with other families and RMHC staff.
The proximity of the house to the hospital has been a game-changer for them.
“I have saved on both time and transport costs. I no longer spend an hour each travelling back and forth from home to NUH,” she explained. Working shift hours, both Azura and Fauzan could check in on Farhan before and after their work shifts, providing them peace of mind and allowing them to stay closely involved in his care.
Recently, Farhan underwent an open-heart surgery. The operation was deemed a huge success, and Farhan’s condition is improving daily.
Azura speaks proudly of her son’s strength. “He is an overcomer,” she said. Farhan’s resilience motivates Azura and her husband to continue their journey of recovery with him, one day at a time.
